Salesforce Log A Call Layout

It tracks the phone number, caller, date, time, and duration of the call. I am new to salesforce i mean here can we add log a call for custom object, i checked we can use activities object, but i am not sure if i change the layout of this screen, i think it will affect layout if this is used in account/lead objects.
